"Srinagar Records The Lowest Temperature In 30 Years".
The temperature in Jammu and Kashmir has been plummeting in negatives. Srinagar recorded its coldest night after 30 years. The officials of the Meteorological Department said that the temperature in Srinagar dropped to minus 8.8 degrees Celsius on Sunday.
The maximum temperature 2 degrees Celsius in Srinagar on Saturday, also the lowest maximum recorded for this season.
The officials said, "From today onwards there is going to be the perceptible improvement in the night temperatures in both J&K and Ladakh,"
Sonam Lotus, director of the MeT department for J&K and Ladakh said that minus 8.8 is the lowest minimum temperature recorded after exactly 30 years in Srinagar.
"In 1991 the minimum temperature recorded was minus 11.8 in Srinagar," Lotus said. The minimum temperature for Pahalgam is minus 12 and minus 8 in Gulmarg. Leh town of Ladakh recorded minus 16.6, Kargil recorded minus 17.4 degrees Celsius, Drass recorded minus 26.2 degrees Celius as the night’s lowest winters.
Jammu city recorded 5.8 degree Celsius, Katra recorded 5.4 degree Celsius, Batote recorded 1.1 degree Celsius, Bannihal recorded 0.6 degree Celsius and Bhaderwah recorded minus 1.5 degree Celsius as the minimum temperature.
The 40-day long period of harsh winter cold known locally as the 'Chillai Kalan' ends on Sunday, but not without leaving an indelible mark in the record book for ushering in one of Kashmir's coldest winters in living memory.
