What does Thugs of Hindostan mean for YRF?

The reviews of Thugs of Hindostan are scathing. Any other production house would call it quits and stay away from film-making, forever. However, this is YRF we are talking about, so that will not be the case. However, YRF did take a huge risk with this film and also went against a decision that they’d taken a while ago. After big films like Detective Byomkesh Bakshy, Befikre failed at the box office, there were rumors that YRF would move towards smaller stories. With films like Mardaani and Dum Laga Ke Haisha working at the box office, we wondered if YRF would stay away from blockbuster productions like Jab Tak Hai Jaan, Dhoom 3, etc.

The good news is that all the names attached will come unscathed from the failure of the film. Aamir’s performance has been reviewed well, Amitabh Bachchan doesn’t have to prove anything to anyone any longer and Fatima Sana Shaikh will be shielded well. Katrina Kaif will be resolute that she had a blink and miss role in the film. The person who loses the most is Vikay Krishna Acharya, the writer director of what could have been a magnum opus, but isn’t, unfortunately.

When Thugs of Hindostan made its way to the marquee, there was this thought that YRF was born to make big films and they couldn’t shy away from that. Now, the big opening might have given YRF leeway, but the bad reviews will definitely stick and any future deals about the film might be called off. There’s no saying whether we will see the film within a few months on the streaming platforms as well, because there’s no precedent of that for YRF.
