Poonam married actor Shatrughan Sinha in 1980. The two had earlier met in a train compartment while traveling. After her marriage, she largely left her acting career to raise their children. After a long gap of thirty years, she starred in the film Jodhaa Akbar (2008) playing Mallika Hamida Banu Begum - mother of Emperor Akbar, enacted by Hrithik Roshan, directed by noted film director Ashutosh Gowariker.
As for Sonakshi Sinha, she is currently busy with multi-starrer historical war drama, Bhuj – The Pride Of India, starring Ajay Devgn, Sanjay Dutt, Sonakshi Sinha, Nora Fatehi, Sharad Kelkar, Ammy Virk, and Pranitha Subhash.
The film is directed, co-produced, and written by Abhishek Dudhaiya. Set during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, it is about the life of IAF Squadron Leader Vijay Karnik, the then in-charge of the Bhuj airport who, with his team, reconstructed the IAF airbase with the help of 300 women from the local village Madhapar.
